Quia Books are online, interactive versions of books from leading educational publishers. Publishers make their best-selling products available as Quia Books, which feature unique interactive options for students and instructors at all levels.

What are the system requirements for Quia Books?

You will need an up-to-date Web browser and an Internet connection. Speakers or headphones are necessary for listening to media, and a microphone is needed for recording activities. For detailed system requirements, click here.

I can't hear the audio for an assignment. What should I do?

If you are having trouble hearing the audio in your book, try downloading and installing the latest version of Flash from Adobe.

Click the Download now button to download and run Adobe Flash Player. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

I can't record an assignment. How can I fix this?

If you are having trouble recording, check your Flash settings. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open the exercise, and right-click on the white space directly beneath the Record button.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. At the bottom of the menu, click the second tab from the left (the tab has a monitor with an eye on it).
  4. Make sure the Allow option and the Remember check boxes are selected.
  5. Click the fourth tab (the one with a microphone on it).
  6. Make sure the record volume is up all the way and the correct microphone is selected from the drop-down list. (If you have the correct microphone selected, you will see a green and red bar move whenever you speak into your microphone.)
  7. Click Close.

If you still cannot record, the version of Flash installed on your computer may only be compatible with a USB microphone. Newer versions of Flash are designed specifically to work with microphones that connect via USB ports. Using a USB microphone should solve the problem.

Why are the activities not appearing in my book?

In order for activities to appear, your browser needs to have Java enabled. The browsers supported are Internet Explorer, Firefox 3 or higher, Chrome, and Safari. To enable Java in your browser, do one of the following:

I'm an instructor. How do I create an account?

An account gives you access to the Instructor and Student Workstations on Quia Books and to the Instructor and Student Zones on Quia Web. Creating an account is easy; all you need is a valid e-mail address! If you already have a Quia Web account, then you do not need to create a new account for Quia Books. If you do not have an account and would like to create one now, click here.

I'm a student. How do I create an account?

If you have never created a student account before, click here to create your new account. All you need is a valid e-mail address!

I can't remember my password. What now?

Don't worry! Click Forgot password, and enter your username and e-mail address. Be sure to use the e-mail address that is associated with your account. Your password will be reset, and a new one will be sent to you by e-mail.

How do I change my password?

To change your password, log in to your account, and click the Profile link. Then, click change. Enter your current password and desired password. Click Change password when finished.

What happens if I forget my username?

If you forget your username, just click on the Forgot username link, and enter the e-mail address associated with your account. Your username will be sent to you by e-mail.

Can I update my e-mail address?

Sure! If you want to change the e-mail address associated with your account, log in, and click on the Profile link. Enter the updated e-mail address, and click Save changes.

Is it possible to change my name?

Yes, you can change your name by logging in to your account and submitting a request to Technical Support. Please note that you cannot change the name on your account to that of another student. In the Help request section, select Other from the drop-down list, and fill out the form. Click Submit when finished.

Can I buy a hard copy textbook from the Bookstore?

No. You can purchase online access to workbooks, lab manuals, and e-books, but Quia's Bookstore does not sell hard copy textbooks or other physical components. If you are unsure where to purchase your textbook, contact your instructor.

How do I purchase a Quia Book?

There are two ways to purchase an online book: (1) by using a book key that comes prepackaged with a textbook, or (2) using a credit card to gain access.

If you bought a new textbook, it may have come prepackaged with a book key. (A book key is a code that grants you access to the online book.) Just enter the code in the field in the upper-right corner of the Bookstore page.

If the textbook you bought did not come with a book key, you can purchase online access to your book from the Bookstore. Find the appropriate book, click Buy, and enter your credit card information.

What is a book key?

A book key is a code that grants you access to an online book. The book key may come prepackaged with a new textbook or on a separate passcard.

Once you have a book key, you can enter it the upper-right corner of the Quia Bookstore page to begin using your book.

Do I need a course code?

If you are enrolled in a class, your instructor will provide you with a course code. A course code allows an instructor to track your progress through the book and to assign grades. Unless you are using your book on your own, outside of a school setting, you will need a course code.

I am an independent learner. How do I use the online book?

If you do not have a course code and do not intend on enrolling in a course, you have the option to use your book independently. To do so, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Click on Details or Book details.
  3. Click Use book independently, and confirm when prompted.

You can now open your book, and submit your work independently without an instructor. Please note if you register for another course using this book, completed independent work will be cleared from your account.

How do I register for a different instructor's course?

If you are currently registered in an instructor's course and want to register for a different instructor's course, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://books.quia.com.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Locate the book and current course in the Student Workstation, and click Options.
  4. Click Change course/instructor.
  5. Enter the new course code in the Course Code box, and click Submit.

If your course has ended and you want to register for another course, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://books.quia.com.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Locate the book in the Student Workstation, and click Enroll.
  4. Enter the new course code, and click Submit.

What do I do when my book expires?

Book key durations may vary depending on the title and publisher. To find out when your book expires, log in to your Student Workstation. Click Class Details. The book duration can be found in the Book Information section.

When your book expires, you can extend the book for an additional period by following these steps:

  1. Go to http://books.quia.com.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Locate the book in the Student Workstation, and click Extend.
  4. Enter the required credit card information, and submit the form.

Access to your Quia Book will be extended.

How can I get an instructor trial?

As an instructor, you can obtain a trial book key that will give you access for 30 days. To request one, go to the Quia Bookstore, and click the Adoptions and trials link next to the book you would like to try. Select the option to request a 30-day trial, submit the form with your contact information, and click Submit. A representative will contact you to give you a trial book key. Once you receive the book key, enter it in the upper-right corner of the Quia Bookstore to begin using the book.

How do I adopt a book?

Go to the Bookstore, find the book you are interested in, and click Adoptions and trials. Select I am ready to adopt this book. Complete the rest of the form with your contact information, and click Submit. A representative will contact you and give you an adoption book key. Once you receive the book key, enter it in the upper-right corner of the Bookstore. The book will be added to your Instructor Workstation. You may use it as is, or, if you wish, you may begin customizing it to fit your needs. When you are ready, you can give your students access by sharing the appropriate course codes.

How do I create a new course for a new term?

After your Quia course ends, you can set up a brand new course with new classes each semester/term. If you are using the same book for the new semester/term from the previous semester/term, you do not need a new book key. In cases where a book key is required, you will be prompted to enter the key before filling out the Create a new course form.

To start a new term for a new course and classes with new students, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://books.quia.com.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Locate the finished course, and click on Start new term to go to the Create a new course form.
  4. Enter the course title and duration.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. Fill out the class information for your new course.
  7. Click Submit.

Or, you can also:

  1. Go to http://books.quia.com.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Click the course title.
  4. Click the Options tab.
  5. Click Create new course, and fill out the form.
  6. Click Submit.

Once you have created your new course, you can create new classes by selecting the course and filling out the form on the Classes tab.
